SRVANY.EXE

There is a program called SRVANY.exe as a NT4.0 Resource Kit which allows NT to run applications as services.

Documentation is available at: ftp://ftp.alchemyzone.com/pub/games/misc/nt4/Srvany.doc

The application is available at: ftp://ftp.alchemyzone.com/pub/games/misc/nt4/Srvany.exe

Here are a few comments from other Admins:

There are a couple of utilities on the NT resource kit you can use for this. I use one called “instsrv”. Basically I copy a file (srvany.exe, I think) into the directory with the app I want to run as a service. Then you do “instsrv (service name) (full path to renamed srvany.exe)”. Once that’s done, edit the registry for the properties of the service you just created according to the instructions in the reskit.

Oh yeah, and the reason I can’t remember if ‘srvany.exe” is the correct name of the executable is I always rename it to something like “Unreal_service” or “BC_service”. I don’t think it really makes a difference as long as you have multile copies of the “srvany.exe” file but it seems to be a good convention.

The reskit has much better instructions on how to do this.
