How to log in as the server administrator

In order to login as the Server Administrator on your Ventrilo Server, you will need the password you created in the ventrilo_srv.ini.

To log into your server as the Administrator:

  1. Log onto your Ventrilo server. Note: Many users try to enter the Admin Password under the Server section before opening Ventrilo. This will not allow you access to the server, let alone administrative rights.
  2. After logging in, right-click anywhere in the whitespace of the Ventrilo client and scroll down to Server Admin/Login. This is where you will enter the Admin Password that you set in the ventrilo_srv.ini.
  3. If you successfully entered the correct password, you will notice an "A" next to the server name on the top of the Ventrilo client. This shows that you are logged on as the Server Administrator.
Basic administration guides:

How to create an AFK channel

How to give a player access to a channel

Restricting access to a channel can be done in two different ways through the Ventrilo software. You can restrict access to a channel by making the channel password-protected, prompting users to enter the Channel Password before being allowed access to the channel (see How Do I Password Protect Channels). You can also restrict access to channels by using the User Editor and giving desired users listed on the server access to restricted channels. This is a little more complicated, however, your users do not need to enter a password every time they enter the channel.

To create a channel that has Channel Authentication through the User Editor:

  1. Connect to your Ventrilo Server.
  2. Log in as the Server Administrator.
  3. Right-click on the name of your server listed at the top of the whitespace in the Ventrilo client. Scroll down to Channel Admin/Create.
  4. A window titled "Setup Channel – Create" should now be open. There are several spaces open for you to input the title of your channel, phonetic, comment, and password. Note: Since you want to create a channel with Channel Authentication, do not set a channel password. Instead, choose User Authorization as the Protected Mode for this channel.
  5. Once you have selected the proper settings you wish the channel to have, click the Ok button on the bottom of the window. Your channel should now be visible in the Ventrilo client. Note: There should be a yellow (+/-) sign next to the channel. This shows that the channel requires User Authorization.
  6. Now that you have created the channel, log into the User Editor and click the Channel Authorization tab on the right hand side. Next, select the user from the Current Users section that you wish to have access to the protected channel. Highlight the channel in the Available section and click Add. This user will now have access to the restricted channel.
How to password protect channels
  1. Connect to your Ventrilo Server.
  2. Log in as the Server Administrator.
  3. Right-click on the name of the channel you wish to password protect. Scroll down the Channel Admin/Edit.
  4. A window titled "Setup Channel – Edit" should now be open. From here, you will want to enter the password you wish the channel to have under the "Channel Password" space.
  5. Make sure to also click the "Channel Password" tab under the Protected Mode box toward the top of the window. Note: Steps 4 and 5 may be done while creating the channel (See: How do I add channels through Ventrilo?)
  6. Click Ok once you have entered the desired password and checked the proper protection mode. Your channel is now password protected. Anyone trying to enter this channel will be prompted to enter a password before they are given access.
How to run multiple instances of Ventrilo
  1. In order to run multiple instances of Ventrilo, you will first need to create a shortcut for Ventrilo.exe. This can be done by right-clicking the Ventrilo program listed under the Start menu and scroll to Create Shortcut.
  2. After the shortcut is created, right-click the shortcut on your Desktop and scroll down to Properties.
  3. In the space for Target, you will see "C:\Program Files\Ventrilo\Ventrilo.exe". In order to run multiple instances of Ventrilo, simply add a "-m" onto the end of the Target. When finished, the target should appear as so: "C:\Program Files\Ventrilo\Ventrilo.exe"-m
  4. You are now capable of running multiple instances of Ventrilo on your PC.
How to set the MOTD

The MOTD (also known as the Message of the Day), is a message that is displayed in a text box to all registered users on the server when they first log on. If a user is not listed on the User Editor, then he or she will be displayed the Guest MOTD instead of the MOTD.

The difference between the Guest MOTD and the MOTD is the users in which the message will be displayed to. If a user is listed on the User Editor, he or she will be shown the MOTD when they first log onto the server. If a user is not listed on the User Editor, he or she will be shown the Guest MOTD when they first log onto the server.

  1. Connect to your Ventrilo Server.
  2. Log in as the Server Administrator.
  3. Right-click anywhere in the whitespace of the Ventrilo client and scroll down to the Server Admin/MOTD. MOTD serves as an acronym for Message of the Day.
  4. In the text box that appears after selecting MOTD, you may enter whatever message you wish to appear to the registered users listed on the server’s User Editor. Note: Any users who are not listed on the User Editor will be shown the Guest MOTD, which differs completely from the MOTD.
  5. You will also notice a box on the bottom left-hand side of the window that reads "Display only if it changes." When checked, this option will only display the MOTD if it is changed. For guilds and clans that play together frequently, the MOTD may not be necessary and this option will want to be checked.
  6. After entering the text you wish to be displayed, click the Send button. You have now set the MOTD.

How do filters work in Ventrilo?

The filters in Ventrilo can be found under the Server Admin/Server Properties menu. In order to create, edit, or delete filter settings on the Server Properties page, you must first log on as the Server Administrator. On the bottom left hand side of the window, you will see a box titled Spam filters. Ventrilo offers 5 different filter features including Chat, Comment, Wave, TTS, and Channel.

If you click on the Chat filter under Spam filters, you will see that there are three entry boxes titled Action, Interval, and Times. All 5 different types of Spam filters use these settings to determine which communication actions should be filtered out on your Ventrilo server. Under the Action setting, you have the option to "Do Nothing, Kick the User, or Ban the User" depending on which you prefer. Under the Interval setting, you will notice numbers ranging from 500 to 60,000. Intervals are measured in milliseconds and allow you to filter out certain types of communication within a desired amount of milliseconds. The Times window is how many times this user must perform the communication action within the desired timeframe before filter action is taken against them.

For example, if you set the Chat filter to:
Action: Kick User
Interval: 1500
Times: 3

The Filter settings will kick any users who try to Chat transmit 3 times within 1.5 seconds. If you wish to make it more or less, you may do so simply by changing the settings through your server properties.

What is RCon?

The RCon, or Remote Console, is used to send server commands directly to your Ventrilo server. You may do so via a command line interface that opens when the RCon window is selected from Server Admin/RCon. To do so, you must first be logged in as the Server Administrator. To see a list of different commands that are associated with RCon, type "help" into the RCon window and a list of all commands will be provided.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Fixing laggy sound in game

If your having problems with your ventrilo breaking up when in a game most of the time it means the cpu is overloaded and there is not enough power to run ventrilo normaly.

  1. Open the ventrilo client program.
  2. Click "setup" on the right side.
  3. Click the "Misc" tab, change the process priority setting to "high", click ok and your done.

Fixing lag that occurs when talking

  1. Most cases where the ping is increasing only when talking are related to a connection upstream saturation. Ventrilo is a program using a connection upstream mostly when transmitting voice discussion to the server. If the connection used is not sufficient, the data will start to be queued which will cause the high delay and ping.

To fix this issue, the server owner must lower the codec quality. Lower quality mean, less data transmitted and it should improve the situation.

If this soulution is not working or not improving the problem please review these entire support files.

Experiencing lag and high pings

High pings and lag can be caused by several different factors on both the client side and server side. In order to help diagnose server lag issues, users should perform what is called a pathping in order to trace the route from the server to the client. Users should perform a pathping when they are actually experiencing the lag and high pings to receive information relative to the issue.

To perform a pathping:

  1. Open up the Command Prompt window on your computer. This can be done by opening the Start/Run menu and by entering "cmd" in the space provided.
  2. Once you have successfully opened the Command Prompt window, you will want to enter the following text into the command prompt:
    pathping “servername or ip address”
For example, if your server’s hostname is snipersparadise.net, you would enter:
pathping snipersparadise.net into the Command Prompt.
  3. It may take a few minutes for the pathping to trace the route of the server to your PC.

Unable to connect error

If you get an error "Unable to connect", most of the time it means that the server is unreachable and does not necessarily mean that it is offline.

  1. Verify that the server your trying to connect to is online
  2. Verify your server address to be sure you have the right port and server address.
  3. Verify the address or port field to be sure there are no spaces or unwanted caracters
  4. In some cases firewalls or anti virus can block the communication with the server, click here for more informationa Anti-Virus and Firewall related issues.

Unresolved DNS/Hostname error

  1. There is multiple causes to this problem but the most common one is that the server address is wrong or not resolvable by your internet service provider.
To fix this issue, verify there are no spaces or error in your address. If there is no error, for the server address use the IP address instead of the domain name.
If the problem still occurs with the IP address please refer to the Anti-Virus and Firewall related issues.

Could not authenticate error

This error message is caused by an unidentified username, password, or both. Your username or password may be correct, however, one of the two is unrecognized by the Ventrilo server. The first step you should take after experiencing this error message is to re-type your username and password in the Connection Editor. You may access this by clicking the box labeled with the "->" to the right of Server heading in the Ventrilo client.

Synchronizing error

The synchronizing error experienced after the connection process is caused by a restricted port access issue on your computer. In order to operate properly, the Ventrilo client requires that UDP ports 5000 and 6100 are open for Ventrilo to use.

How to fix sound distortion

Poor sound quality is most likely caused by a poor codec setting on a specific channel or on the entire server. The newest version of Ventrilo sets channel codecs on a channel-by-channel basis. In order to ensure that every channel has the proper codec setting, follow the steps listed below.

  1. Connect to your Ventrilo Server.
  2. Log in as the Server Administrator.
  3. Right-click on each channel, starting at the top, and scroll down to Channel Admin/Edit.
  4. Once the "Setup Channel – Edit" window is open, you will notice a box in the middle right-hand side of the screen titled Channel Specific Codec. You will want to set this to the highest quality GSM or Speex codec (GSM – 44KHz, 16 Bit) (Speex – 32 KHz, 16 Bit, 10 Qlty). The other option is to set each channel to Dictated by Server, as long as the server setting for each channel is one listed above. Note: If you have Mac users on your server, or want the server to be Mac-friendly, use the Speex codec instead of GSM. The Speex codec is both PC and Mac compatible, and will provide great sound quality and clarity.
  5. After ensuring that all channels on your Ventrilo server are set to the highest quality codecs, you should experience much better sound quality and clarity.

How to fix noise interferences

Here is a list of things that can help when trying to eliminate moises picked up by your microphone.

  1. The first thing to check is that the latest drivers for your sound card are installed. Drivers can fix similar issue like background noises.

  2. Be sure that you are using an headset and not speakers to play your sounds. The microphone can pick up the sound from the speakers which can create noises and bad echo.
  3. Some noises are reported to be caused by computer parts such as case fans, power supply, video card fan. It is hard to determine for sure if it's the cause and there is no real solution.
  4. Some poeple get a "hummming" sound when they speak, that is often reported with unboard sound card, be sure the latest drivers are installed. Some humming sound can be caused by bad power but it is pretty rare and can not be confirmed except by trying another power supply. Adding a PCI sound card can fix this issue but can not be verify unless a new card is installed to your computer.
  5. in some cases it can simply be a bad microphone or microphone cable. Try moving/shaking the microphone cable when speaking and see if it amplify your noises. Of course if you have another microphone avaible for testing it is the best way to determine if it is the cause of your noises.

How to fix the sound breaking up(skip) that does not occur only when in game

If you hear poeple breaking up when they talk and/or poeple reporting that your voice is breaking up, there are a lot of different causes and solutions possible.

  1. If you can hear your friends without problems, but they report to you that your voice is breaking up:
    1. It can be related to your microphone sensivity setting, if you are not using the push to talk button and the sensivity is not set properly it can register parts of your discussion only.
    2. In the ventrilo setup try lowering your sensivity.
  2. In some cases the problem can be caused by a broken microphone wire.

    1. Open Teamspeak, open the "Settings -> Input/output" menu and click local test mode.
    2. Move your microphone wire while talking and see if your voice is breaking up more when shaking the wire.
    3. If your voice break up when moving the microphone wire, there is an high possibility that your wire is broken and a new microphone is needed
    4. Another commun cause is a too high cpu load caused by other running programs

How to fix echoing by muting microphone in Windows XP

  1. Open Windows Control Panel
    1. A) Click the Windows "Start" button
    2. B) Click the "Control Panel" option
  2. Open Windows "Sounds and Audio Devices"
  3. Open Windows "Master Volume"
    1. A) Click the "Voice" tab
    2. B) Click "Volume..." button under "Voice playback"
  4. Mute the "Mic Volume" or similar option

How to fix big distortion when talking

The most commun cause of distortion is the microphone volume is too high.

  1. You can adjust your recording sound volume in your window control panel.
    1. Click, Start, control Panel, Sound & audio devices and go in the tab Voice.
    2. Click the "Volume..." button under the recording section, and adjust your microphone input volume and be sure that the Select box under Microphone is selected and nothing else.
    3. You can as well if needed disable or enable the microphone boost, click the "Advanced" button under the microphone volume bar and you will have another window with a microphone boost check box.

How to fix echoing in background

There is one known reason why your computer can echo your sound to others almost perfectly:

  1. Make sure that your microphone is selected as recording device
    1. Click, Start, control Panel, Sound & audio devices and go in the tab Voice.
    2. Click the "Volume..." button under the recording section, and adjust your microphone input volume and be sure that the Select box under Microphone is selected and nothing else.

How to adjust microphone sensitivity in ventrilo

  1. Open your ventrilo client and go in the setup
  2. Click the monitor button on the bottom left side of the setup window
  3. In the white area in the minddle it will start displaying numbers. These numbers are the decibels registered from your microphone input. When you are not talking the numbers should be very close to zero or zero, when talking they should increase.
  4. Try to talk and stop talking a few times Under the sensivity field type in a number a little lower than the number displayed in the monitor area when you star talking. I made 4 tests and they were around 20-30, I set my sensivity field at 15.
  5. Setting it to 15 means that when your microphone input will exceed 15 decibels it will start recording and sending your voice to others.
  6. If you put it too low it will start recording even if you do not talk because it will register background noises, that can be annoying for the people listening to you.
  7. Putting your sensitivity too high will most likely cause breaking up problems, ventrilo will not start recording even if your talking because the decibels were not high enough to hit the sensitivity setting and start recording.

Microphone problems.

Nobody can hear you talking but you can hear others

There is several reasons why your microphone can not transmit your voice to the others:

  1. Be sure that your microphone is plugged in the right place in your computer, most people it is the pink plug.
  2. Check on your headset cable for a mute button, some headsets come with a mute button attached to the cable.
  3. Check if your ventrilo is not on any mute settings, some mute settings are in the main window of your ventrilo and one other in the setup page.
  5. Make sure that you have the right recording device selected in the setup of ventrilo.
    1. Open you ventrilo setup window and select the input device corresponding to your computer sound card, if you do not know try all the listed choice one by one to see if it is your current problem.

Why do I see a yellow speaker when others are transmitting?

The speaker icon that is next to usernames listed on your Ventrilo server is an informative icon that changes as users’ transmitting abilities and actions change. When a user is not transmitting, the speaker should appear red. When they are transmitting across the server, the speaker should change to green.

Sometimes, you will notice that another user’s speaker next to their username is yellow. This indicates that this user does not have the ability to transmit to you. Please check to make sure that you have the right to "Receive Broadcast Streams" set on your username. This can be found on the Network tab of your server's User Editor. Also, make sure that the user transmitting does not have their microphone muted on Ventrilo.

I cannot switch channels, how can I fix that?

If you are unable to switch channels on your server, your username on the server probably does not have permission to move from channel to channel. To fix this, you will need to log into your server as the administrator and go to the User Editor. To get to the User Editor, simply right-click on Ventrilo and go to Server Admin -> User Editor.

Once on the User Editor, select your username from the list of "Current Users" and then go to the Network tab. From there, you will want to make sure that the option to "Switch Channels" is checked. After you check that box, press the [Update] button to make sure your username is updated with those new permissions.

Why can't Mac users talk over my Ventrilo server?

If you have any Mac users logging onto your server, you will need to make sure that your server is setup to use a Speex codec. To ensure that your server is using a Speex codec, log onto your online control panel and go to the Server : Configuration page. From there, you will be able to change the codec for your server. After a codec has been selected, please make sure to press the [Update] button at the bottom of the page.
