Sniper's Paradise!

Setting up a Dedicated Unreal Server from within the Game for the Internet

We are going to launch a dedicated server from within the Game itself, this is the easiest place for "Newbies" to begin. We will be connecting to the Internet for this article.

Click on options | preferences | network | select "LAN,Cable,xDSL"
[ just a note here... the above line with spaces and bars will be how I show steps in a selection (drop down) menu]

"Max Team Score" set the game score for ending the TeamGame here.

"Weapons Stay" check this box for the weapon to remain in the map when you pick it up, making it available for the next player to be able to pick it up immediately. If you uncheck the box, then after you pick up the weapon, it will disappear from the map for a set amount of time, leaving the next player without that weapon available to him/her and cussing because they need a weapon now hehe.

"Max Connections" set the maximum number of player you want to allow in the game.

"Force Team Balance" check this box for the game engine to balance the teams as players come into the game, it bases the decision on the number of players on each team at that moment of entry.

"Force Respawn" if you check this box then when you are killed you will immediately respawn (re-enter the game) with no time to catch your breathe, think about what is happening or get a drink. If you walk away from the computer with your player still in the game, it will keep respawning and getting killed, causing your teammates to get really annoyed at you :( if you did this on someone else's server and they saw what was happening, they would most likely "KICK" you from the server.

"Friendly Fire percentage" this sliding scale lets you adjust how much "pain and damage" you cause your teammate when you "accidentialy" shoot them. Most servers run it at 0%.

"Time Limit" set this in minutes, for how long you want the game to run before it shuts down the level if the score has not been reached.

"Max Spectators" this sets the number of people who can enter the game as a spectator. Spectators pull down the same amount of bandwidth and CPU usage and memory allocation as a player. So be careful how many you let watch.

"Max Teams" This sets the maximum number of teams that will be allowed in the game. If you have it set for 2, the default will be BLUE and RED, if you try to join the GREEN team it will not allow it to happen.

"Game Style" the normal setting is Hardcore. There is a drop down menu with other settings, none of which I have tried ( no time..hehe ) but feel free to experiment with them.

"Game Speed" again the "sliding scale" will set the game to run faster or slower depending on the setting.

"Air Control"...uuhh I haven't used it or even asked what it does LOL.

"Translocator" box if you check this then the use of the Translocator will be allow on the server. It is a wrist worn device (beacon) that you "shoot" over to a location by pressing "fire" button, if you press the "fire" button again you will be transported over to the spot where the Translocator beacon is.

"Base Skill" this sets the "killing" skills of the BOTs making them easy targets or feared opponents who will beat you into the ground :)

"Min. Total Players" this is the minimum number of player (Human and BOTS) that will be maintained in the game. If the Human Player count drops below this then the BOTS will come in to keep the number at the minimum. As Human players enter the game, the BOTS will leave. If the Human player count goes to this number then there will be "NO" BOTS.

"Auto Adjust Skill" if you check this box then as you are playing the game with BOTS in it, they will "learn" how to play better as the game progresses.

"Balance Teams" if you check this box then the BOTS will move back and forth between teams as needed to keep them balanced based on the number of players on each team.

"Configure" Button if you click on this it will open a new screen showing the BOTS and their individual settings.

"Random Order" if you check this box then which BOTS enter the game will be chosen randomly. If you uncheck it then they will appear in the order that they are listed in your "Configure" screens.

"Server Name" enter the name of your server.

"Admin Name" your admin name.

"Admin E-mail" if you wish to be contacted about your server. This is good for getting feedback from players about your server...good and bad.

"MOTD Line 1 thru 4" Message of the Day fields.

"Advertise Server" check this box for Internet play, this is to add your server to the Internet game browsers.

"ngWorldStats Logging" check this box, it is for Internet Servers only.

"Optimizefor LAN" uncheck this box it is for LAN play only. It sets your maxClientrate and maxtickrates to higher values as the LAN will handle those settings and you Internet connection will NOT.

"Game password" use this if you only want players who know this password, to get into the game. Good for private games, Clan Matches, or Clan Practice sessions.

"Admin Password" this password is for the Admin to be able to change settings in the game from the Command Console Window.

"WWW Remote Admin" check this box if you want to control your server from a remote PC location over the Internet using you built it Remote Admin Website.

"WWW Username" this will bt the Admin name you use to access the Remote Admin Website.

"WWW Password" this will be the password you will use to gain access to the Remote Admin Website.

"Webserver Port No." Also called the Listen Port in your Unreal.ini file. The default is 80, other server software use port 80 also, so if you have any of these running you will need to change this number to something like 90 or 8888. If you are on a Linux box then this number needs to be greater that 1024. A commonly used number is 5080.
If you change this number, then when you enter your http address then you have to add this port number to it:
example of a normal address log in:

http://24.160.33.22/ServerAdmin/

with the port number added:

http://24.160.33.22:8888/ServerAdmin/

make sure you add that last / otherwise it will not work.

Now Click on the "Dedicated Button" to launch a dedicated server. This will NOT allow you to play in the game from thesame machine and in the same game that is running the Unreal Server.

The game will close down and you will see an Unreal icon appear in the lower righthand portion of you taskbar.

If you right click on the icon you will see a drop down menu like this:

If you left click on the top option "UnrealServer Option" you will see: ( What does this do, well that is another Article on another day)
However if you read the lines shown in the Console window, you will see that the UdpServerUplink: ports successfully bound to three Unreal Browsers:
mplayer, EpicGames and Gamespy. So hopefully everyone will see your server and come in to play. :)

If you choose "Advanced Options" you will see: ( What this does is a whole other article too, LOL)

Last but not least "Exit UnrealServer" :

if you click on that....yes you guessed it...you will shutdown the server and exit Unreal all together.
