Installing S3TC textures for Unreal Tournament.

This Installation Guide shows you how to prepare Unreal Tournament for the use of S3TC textures.

Step 1 Install Unreal Tournament and use only the 1st CD textures

Step 2 Download and install the ut436 patch.

Step 3 Install the renderers

- Download and install the latest stable OpenGL patch: utglr34.zip
- Download and install the latest stable D3D8 patch: utd3d8r12.zip
- Download and install the latest stable D3D9 patch: utd3d9r10.zip

Note: You can choose to install either one or all renderers depending on what renderer you want to use. Some players like OpenGL, some like D3D, if you dont know which one to choose, install all three and try the renderers in game to find out which one works best for you.

Install the patches into your C:\UnrealTournament\System folder.

Step 4 Preparing Unreal Tournament

Start UT and you should get follow screen:




Then check "Show all devices" and you will get the following screen:





Then choose your Renderer, in this case we choose OpenGL but you can pick either one (OpenGL, D3D8, D3D9) and you will get follow screen:

Changing the preferences in the menu

Once UT is started hit ESC to get the main menu. Now go to Options--> Preferences---> Video and change there what it shows in the next picture:

Click close and hit ESC again and you will see this screen:



Altering the renderers performance

Now hit the TAB button and type: preferences and hit enter and UT will minimize and show the following screen:





Open the menu Rendering on the bottom and you will see this:





Preparing the D3D8 Renderer

In the D3D8 Rendering options, change UseS3TC from False to True):





Preparing the D3D9 Renderer

In the D3D9 Rendering options, change UseS3TC from False to True):





Preparing the OpenGL Renderer

In the OpenGL Rendering options, change UseS3TC from False to True):





Step 5 Download S3TC textures

There are a few textures you need from the 2nd UT CD that cannot be found on the 1st CD: 2ndCDTextures

Download and install the S3TC textures:

Low End versions for 32 Mb, 64 Mb and 128 Mb videocards:

UT LowEnd Texture Package 1
UT LowEnd Texture Package 2
UT LowEnd Texture Package 3
UT LowEnd Texture Package 4
UT LowEnd Texture Package 5


High End versions for 128 Mb, 256 Mb, 384 Mb, 512 Mb or larger videocards:

UT HiEnd Texture Package 1
UT HiEnd Texture Package 2
UT HiEnd Texture Package 3
UT HiEnd Texture Package 4
UT HiEnd Texture Package 5


Extreme End versions for 512 Mb, 768 Mb, 1024 Mb, 512 Mb SLI, 768 Mb SLI, 1024 Mb SLI cards or higher:

In order to use the Extreme End versions you have to download the High End versions first and than replace them with the Extreme End versions. This is due to the fact that not all packages are available in Extreme End.

Installation

After downloading the files, unzip(or unpack) the files and add the textures to your C:\UnrealTournament\Texture folder by overwriting the excisting packages.
